Shared bills calculator

Split shared bills between two people with different incomes: in proportion to what each earns, straight down the middle, or so both have the same left over, and compare what each method costs each of you.

Rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, the subscriptions you both use.

How it works

The math behind the result

A fifty-fifty split feels fair until incomes differ: the same bill takes a bigger bite of the smaller paycheck. Splitting by income charges each person the same share of what they earn, so a partner who brings in 60% of the household income pays 60% of the shared bills.

Same left over goes a step further and evens out what each person has after the bills. It is the most equalizing method, and the closest to one shared pot while keeping separate accounts. The comparison shows all three side by side on your numbers.

What counts as shared is a decision, not a formula: rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, the streaming plans you both use. Personal debts, hobbies and gifts usually stay individual. Agree on the list first; the split is easy after that.

by income: you pay = bills × your income ÷ (your income + partner’s income)
same left over: you pay = (bills + your income − partner’s income) ÷ 2
