How it works

The math behind the result

A savings goal is a target, a starting balance, a rate, and either a deadline or a monthly amount. Give it the deadline and the calculator solves for the monthly amount; give it the monthly amount and it counts the months until the balance crosses the target.

Interest helps more than it seems on a long goal and barely at all on a short one. What you already have grows the whole time, and each contribution grows from the month it lands, so the earliest dollars carry the most of the load.

The rate is treated as an APY, the yearly yield a savings account states, and converted to its monthly equivalent. If the money will sit in checking, set the rate to zero; the answer is then simple division.

monthly amount = (goal − saved × (1 + r)^n) × r ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1)
r = (1 + APY)^(1 ÷ 12) − 1 · n = months until the deadline
