The math behind the result
The 50/30/20 rule divides after-tax income into three buckets: 50% for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings and paying down debt. It is a starting shape, not a law; an expensive city pushes needs past half, and an aggressive payoff plan pushes savings past a fifth.
Needs are the bills that arrive whether or not you do anything: housing, utilities, groceries, insurance, minimum debt payments, getting to work. Wants are everything you could pause without consequence. Savings covers the emergency fund, retirement, extra debt payments and goals.
The calculator multiplies your income by each share. Whatever needs and wants leave is what you can save, so if those two take everything, the savings bucket shows zero and it is the shares that need adjusting, not the arithmetic.
needs = income × needs share wants = income × wants share savings = income − needs − wants
